 Luxury is, taking time to pause and reconnect with yourself. On a particularly busy Friday afternoon, running the City from one meeting to another, I quickly snuck away to enjoy an hour long Rain Dance. To be honest the idea of a rain dance conjured up images of dancing in the rain, chanting. With this in mind I arrived at Rain Africa Day Spa, a hidden sanctuary amidst the buzz of Cavendish Square in Cape Town. The massage therapist explains the session before she begins twisting and bending my body. Giving me a very deep stretch, and then proceeded to rub and massage my body with a body buttery. “Luxury is … Freedom to do what you want, how you want and when you want” Ernestine White The exhibition, “A Brave New World”… 20 Years of Democracy, currently on at iZiko Museum’s South African National Gallery is a selection of permanent collections acquired in the last 20 years. The dawn of a new democracy in South Africa created the backdrop for the varied subject matter, captured by the Artist’s brushstrokes or camera lenses as they take on critical issues like HIV/AIDS, violence, rape, sexuality, poverty, ethnicity or politics. Over 100 pieces are on display spread across 6 rooms of the museum, the works are placed in conversation with each other to offer multi layered insights into South Africa’s past and present.
